At MealMain, we take your privacy seriously. This policy describes how we collect, use, and protect your information.

1. Information We Collect

We collect several types of information to provide and improve our Service: (a) Account Information: When you register, we collect your name, email address, password, and profile details including username, bio, and profile photo. (b) Health & Nutrition Data: For premium features, we collect information you voluntarily provide including age, gender, weight, height, activity level, health goals, dietary restrictions, allergies, and nutritional preferences. This data is used solely to personalise your experience within MealMain. (c) Usage & Engagement Data: We collect information about how you use MealMain, including recipes viewed, liked, saved and cooked; meal plans created; ingredients added to your shopping list; search queries; and features used. This helps us understand what content is most valuable to you. (d) Shopping & Planning Data: We collect meal plan entries, shopping list contents, and shopping history to provide our planning and cart features. (e) Device Information: We collect device identifiers, operating system version, and app version to provide support and ensure compatibility. (f) Communications: If you contact us, we retain records of that correspondence.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to: (a) Provide, operate, and maintain our Service and all its features; (b) Personalise your experience, including personalising the recipe feed, recommendations, and meal suggestions based on your preferences, dietary restrictions, and past engagement. This is done entirely within MealMain and your data is not shared with third parties for this purpose; (c) Improve our Service. We analyse usage patterns and engagement data in aggregate to understand what features and content work best, improve our recommendation algorithms, and prioritise development. This analysis is conducted internally; (d) Process transactions and manage your subscription; (e) Send you service communications including account notifications, security alerts, and support messages; (f) Serve relevant advertisements through Google AdSense. We may share limited device and interest data with Google for this purpose as described in Section 8; (g) Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service; (h) Respond to your support requests and feedback.

3. Information Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We may share your information only in the following limited circumstances: (a) Service Providers: We share information with trusted third-party providers who assist in operating our Service, including Supabase (database and authentication), Google (advertising), and payment providers (subscription processing). These providers are contractually bound to protect your information and use it only for the services they provide to us. (b) Affiliate Partners: When you click an affiliate link within MealMain, for example links to kitchen products or food delivery services, the partner may receive information such as your click and purchase data. We will clearly identify affiliate content where applicable. (c) Legal Requirements: We may disclose your information where required by law, court order, or government authority, or where necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of MealMain, our users, or others. (d) Business Transfer: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or part of our business, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy. (e) Aggregated Data: We may share anonymised, aggregated information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you, for example general statistics about usage trends.

4. Health & Sensitive Data

MealMain collects certain health-related information such as body measurements, health goals, dietary restrictions, and nutritional intake data. We treat this information with the highest level of care. This data is: (a) Used solely to personalise and improve your experience within MealMain; (b) Never sold to third parties; (c) Never shared with insurance companies, employers, or health organisations without your explicit consent; (d) Protected with appropriate technical security measures. You may delete your health and nutrition profile at any time through the app settings. Deleting this data will affect the personalisation of your experience but will not affect your core access to the Service.

5. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect your personal information, including: (a) Encryption of data in transit using TLS/HTTPS; (b) Row-level security policies ensuring users can only access their own data; (c) Secure authentication managed by industry-standard providers; (d) Regular security reviews of our infrastructure. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you believe your account has been compromised, please contact us immediately at privacy@mealmain.com.

6. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our services. Specifically: (a) Account data is retained for the life of your account; (b) Usage and engagement data is retained for up to 3 years to support personalisation and service improvement; (c) Shopping and meal plan data is retained for the life of your account to provide history features; (d) When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal, tax, or regulatory purposes; (e) Anonymised aggregate data may be retained indefinitely as it cannot be used to identify you.

7. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you have the following rights regarding your personal information: (a) Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you; (b) Correction: Update or correct inaccurate information through your account settings or by contacting us; (c) Deletion: Request deletion of your personal information by deleting your account in-app or contacting privacy@mealmain.com; (d) Portability: Request your data in a portable format; (e) Restriction: Request that we restrict processing of your information in certain circumstances; (f) Objection: Object to processing of your information for direct marketing purposes; (g) Opt-out of personalised advertising: You can opt out of personalised ads through your browser or device settings. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@mealmain.com. We will respond within 30 days.

8. Advertising

MealMain uses Google AdSense to display advertisements to non-premium users. Google may use device identifiers and usage data to serve ads relevant to your interests. (a) We may request non-personalised ads by default in certain regions to support privacy requirements; (b) Google's use of advertising data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy; (c) You can opt out of interest-based advertising through Google's Ads Settings or through your browser and device advertising settings; (d) Premium subscribers do not see advertisements. MealMain may also feature affiliate product links within recipe pages. These links are clearly identified. When you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, we may receive a commission at no additional cost to you. Affiliate relationships do not influence which products appear in the Service.

9. International Data Transfers

MealMain is operated from New Zealand and your information may be stored on servers located in other countries including the United States. By using our Service, you consent to the transfer of your information to countries outside your country of residence, which may have different data protection rules. We ensure that any such transfers comply with applicable data protection law and that your information receives an adequate level of protection.

10. New Zealand Privacy Act 2020

MealMain complies with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. Under this Act, you have the right to: (a) Ask whether we hold personal information about you and request access to it; (b) Request correction of your personal information; (c) Make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner if you believe we have breached the Privacy Act. To make a privacy request or complaint, contact us at privacy@mealmain.com. If we are unable to resolve your complaint, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at www.privacy.org.nz.

11. International Users (GDPR & Other Laws)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or other regions with data protection laws, you have additional rights including those provided by the GDPR: (a) The right to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent; (b) The right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority; (c) Our legal basis for processing your data includes: performance of our contract with you (providing the Service), your consent (for health data and personalised advertising), and our legitimate interests (improving the Service, preventing fraud). For California residents: We do not sell personal information as defined by the CCPA. You have the right to know what information we collect and to request deletion of your data.

12. Children's Privacy

MealMain is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information without your consent, please contact us at privacy@mealmain.com and we will promptly delete such information.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy in the Service and updating the last updated date below. For significant changes, we will provide additional notice such as an in-app or on-site notification. Your continued use of MealMain after any changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
